Picture frame ideas for living rooms
Choosing a frame for your art is almost as important as choosing the art itself - the wrong frame can drown out a delicate piece of art or fail to give it the importance it deserves. There are endless options out there, from grand stately-home-style gilt, to minimalist white, and they come at every price point too. It's perfectly possible to achieve a simple, stylish look with the clean lines of IKEA frames, while more ornate options can be picked up for a song in antique stores and at auctions. We've gathered together some of our favourite examples of beautiful picture framing which lighten and brighten their living rooms.

Slim Black, White and Wood Frames
A chic collection of monochromatic art in slim black, white and wood frames, hangs in the house of sculptor William Pye. When arranging pictures of different shapes, sizes and subject matter, clustering them together in an informal configuration is often best. Make sure the spaces between the frames are even and balanced. Put larger or landscape pictures at the top, and arrange so the horizontal and vertical planes between them are linear.

Grand Gilt
'Almost anything can look good when it is framed well,' says designer Nicky Haslam. 'I frame anything that appeals - postcards, letters, maps; everything but photographs. If I buy a small original of a picture, I'll frame a reproduction as well to make a pair if necessary. Behind the bust of Marie Antoinette in my sitting room (pictured) is a group of sepia engravings of Old Master drawings. The whole lot cost about a fiver; but I framed them up "grand" in rubbed gilt.'

Rows of Gilt
This graceful drawing room in the Cotswolds is blessed with light thanks to a large bay window overlooking the garden. Architect Robert Hardwick designed the panelling, which is painted in Farrow & Ball's 'Old White'. Antique textiles and paintings enhance the airy feel. The house in its present form is only 20 years old, the result of hard work and imagination on the part of the owners and Robert, who is an expert in Costwolds vernacular.

Unframed Painting
With a Victorian brick façade almost filled by a two-storey window, this house was built in the mid-nineteenth century as part of a group of artists' studios when land in the area was cheap and Hampstead was still a village.
In the double-height sitting room, a nineteenth-century copy of Pietro Perugino's Sermon on the Mount hangs above an antique console table topped with a pair of resin lamps by Marianna Kennedy. Plump comfortable sofas are covered with Celia Birtwell fabrics.

Simple Box Frames
In the studio of artist Claire Langdown - wife of sculptor John Nash - one wall is covered in a selection of her work, which fuses watercolour and pastel. Many of these paintings are from a series entitled 'Turner's corner', where Claire has focused her attention on a usually overlooked corner of Turner's painting Pilate Washing His Hands. Simple box-frames in subtly varying tones give a clean, modern look.
